How Much Does Google Ads Management Cost in NZ? (2026 Guide)
Short answer: in New Zealand you pay for Google Ads in two parts: the ad spend that goes to Google, and a management fee paid to whoever builds and optimises your campaigns. At Ghost Monkey, management plans start at $400 NZD per month + GST, and ad spend is always kept separate so you can see exactly where every dollar goes.
This guide explains what drives the cost of Google Ads for NZ businesses, how agencies usually charge, and how to work out a sensible starting budget for your market.
The two costs of Google Ads
1. Ad spend (paid to Google)
Google Ads is an auction. You pay when someone clicks your ad, and the cost per click depends on how many other businesses are bidding on the same searches, how relevant your ad and landing page are, and where your customers are located. A plumber bidding on “emergency plumber Auckland” competes in a very different auction from an online store selling niche products nationwide.
You control ad spend with a daily budget, and you can raise or lower it at any time. Ad spend is paid directly to Google from your own account.
2. Management fee (paid to your agency or specialist)
The management fee covers the work that turns ad spend into results: keyword research, campaign structure, ad copy, conversion tracking, negative keywords, bid strategy, landing page recommendations, testing and reporting. Poorly managed accounts often waste a large share of their budget on irrelevant searches, so good management usually pays for itself.
How agencies in NZ typically charge
- Flat monthly fee – a fixed price for a defined scope. Easy to budget for and the most common model for small and medium businesses.
- Percentage of ad spend – the fee rises as your budget grows. Common for larger accounts.
- Hybrid – a base fee plus a percentage above a certain spend level.
- Set-up fee – some agencies charge separately for building a new account or rebuilding a poorly structured one.
Whichever model you choose, check three things before signing: who owns the Google Ads account (it should be you), whether ad spend is billed separately, and what the minimum term is.

How to choose a starting ad budget
- Start with the value of a customer. If one new client is worth $2,000 to you, a cost per lead of $50–$150 can be very profitable. If a sale is worth $40, you need a much lower cost per click.
- Estimate how many leads you need. Work backwards from your sales target and your typical lead-to-sale conversion rate.
- Check local competition. Keyword Planner and a short test campaign will show you realistic click costs for your service and region (for example Auckland versus all of New Zealand).
- Give the campaign enough data. A budget that only buys a handful of clicks a day makes it hard to learn what works. It is usually better to focus on fewer, high-intent keywords than to spread a small budget thinly.
- Review weekly. We optimise every seven days so budget moves toward the searches, ads and locations that actually generate enquiries.
What makes Google Ads cost more than it should
- No conversion tracking, so Google can’t optimise toward real leads or sales.
- Broad keywords without negative keywords, paying for irrelevant searches.
- Sending all traffic to the home page instead of a relevant landing page.
- Targeting the whole country when most customers come from one city or region.
- Set-and-forget management with no regular testing.
Is Google Ads right for your business?
Google Ads works best when people are actively searching for what you sell: trades, professional services, clinics, ecommerce products and local services. If you need to create demand for something people don’t yet search for, Meta Ads on Facebook and Instagram are often a better starting point. Many businesses use both, supported by SEO for long-term organic traffic.
